Act now to protect your revenue from 0870 numbers!
Over the past few years there has been a change in the public perception of 0870 numbers, primarily due to several articles in the press highlighting the profit being made by some companies from these numbers. In addition, there has been some confusion as to how much people are being charged for such calls. To rectify this, Ofcom has held a review of 0870 numbers.
In April 2006 Ofcom announced that the charge of 7.5ppm to call a 0870 number would be reduced to the current national rate of 2ppm; this change will come into effect on the 31st January 2008.
As of January 2008, you will no longer receive a revenue stream from your 0870 numbers and there is a chance Ofcom will impose a charge on you for incoming calls on such numbers (this is yet to be confirmed).
To continue receiving revenue from incoming calls there are two options you can take: change to an 0844 or 0871 number. Telinet’s recommendation for the majority of our customers is to change to 0844.

Under the new system:
080x calls are free to the caller
084x calls have a variable charge up to 5p per minute
087x calls have a variable charge up to 10p per minute.
There is a new name for 08xx numbers – they are now called Business Rate Services, in an effort to simplify the whole structure for the public to understand better. There has also been a new PSTN number created – 03 xxx to support 01 and 02. 03 is a new UK wide range and is ideal to give your company a national presence when you don’t want to charge your customers, or face a cost yourself. 03 numbers count as a normal phone call when you are calling from a mobile, meaning it will be included in monthly minutes bundles.

01 & 02 – UK PTSN
03 – New UK PSTN (no area code – new UK wide range)
04 & 05 – Reserved
06 – Personal numbering (migration from 070x)
07 – Mobile
080 – Free to caller
08 – Business Rate Services
090 – Premium Rate Services
